Symphony Hall

The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Benjamin Zander, concludes its 45th season with a spectacular concert commemorating the 200th anniversary of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner’s birth. The season’s grand finale opens with renowned pianist Alessandro Deljavan
performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor with the Orchestra and closes with Bruckner’s unfinished—and final—masterpiece, the Symphony No. 9. Zander’s popular “Guide to the Music,” which is open to all ticket holders, precedes the concert at 6:45 PM. The concert will also be available for live streaming.
Zander is one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Bruckner’s music, having received the Kilyeni Medal of Honor from the Bruckner Society of America in 2021. The medal has been awarded to many other outstanding conductors, including Arturo Toscanini and Otto Klemperer, as well as musicians such as Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, and Herbert Blomstedt. Former BSO conductor Serge Koussevitsky is the only other Boston conductor to have received the award and the first to receive it (in 1934).
Performing Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 9 as the 2023-24 season’s closing work serves as a fitting tribute to one of the most influential composers of the Romantic era. From the very beginning of its formation, the Orchestra has returned to Bruckner as a haven for the soul. The Ninth, which Bruckner dedicated "to the beloved God,” is known for its emotional depth and grandeur. 
 
Alessandro Deljavan, who was born of an Italian mother and an Iranian father. made his debut with the Boston Philharmonic in 2019. His captivating performances have earned him considerable critical acclaim. A student of both Menahem Pressler and Richard Goode, he has been noted as a "keyboard virtuoso with an equally virtuoso brain, ear, and imagination" by Richard Dyer, former chief classical music critic of The Boston Globe. In addition to his solo performances, he is the artistic director of the Opera Master School in Villamagna, Italy and records on his own imprint, the AERAS Music Group, which he created in 2021.

While spying on their wives at a "Girls' Night Out," a group of unemployed steelworkers from Buffalo sees how much they enjoy watching male strippers. Jealous, out of work and feeling emasculated, the men come up with a bold and unclothed way to make some quick cash. In preparing, they find themselves extremely exposed; not merely physically but emotionally. As they conquer their fears, self-consciousness and prejudices, the men come to discover that they're stronger as a group, and the strength that they find in each other gives them the individual courage to "let it go." The Rotary Clubs of Bedford and Concord have teamed up to pack meals for the hungry and food insecure right here in Massachusetts in the <a href="https://bedfordmarotary.org/Page/hope-for-the-hungry" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hope for the Hungry</a> event on April 27th. This year, we’re partnered with <a href="https://mealsofhope.org/new-england/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Meals of Hope</a>, a nonprofit organization 501(c)(3) that is committed to bringing people together to fight the hunger epidemic. <a href="https://bedfordmarotary.org/Page/hope-for-the-hungry" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hope for the Hungry</a> relies on volunteer participation to package meals and help the event run smoothly. It’s fun for people of all ages, individuals, families, work colleagues, and club and organization members. The First Parish Music Committee is reviving a popular fundraising event that got derailed by COVID. "An Evening of Jazz" will feature an inter-generational crew of members and friends of First Parish bringing a jazz perspective to tunes from a variety of eras and styles.
 
Performers include Emory Carroll (drums), Buffie Groves (voice), Dean Groves (electric bass), Dave Southard (saxophone), and Steve Sussman (piano).
 
The event will take place Saturday, April 27th, in the Common Room from 7pm to 9pm. There will be two sets with one intermission. Table seating and light bar snacks will be available.
 
Net proceeds from this event will benefit First Parish in Bedford.
Suggested Donations (gratefully accepted at the door) will be $20 for Adults, and $15 for Seniors/Students.

First Church Bedford to Host Two-Day Rummage Sale 
Bedford’s First Congregational Church, 25 Great Road, will host its 2024 Rummage Sale on two days:
1 to 4 p.m. Friday, May 3; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4. 
Admission is free and a $1 donation at the door will benefit the Bedford Food Bank.
This year’s Rummage Sale will feature a wide variety of white elephants, books, puzzles, household goods and small appliances, sports equipment, children’s toys and games, and costume jewelry. (No clothing, shoes, or soft goods will be sold.)
Free parking is available behind the church, and the Rummage Sale is handicapped accessible.

The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO), composed of musicians age 12-21 from the East Coast, performs their final concert of the 2023-24 season under the baton of Founder and Conductor Benjamin Zander. The program opens with Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto followed by Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5, which will also be performed during the BPYO’s five-city European tour from June 15-25. The concert can be experienced both in-person and via livestream.
Schumann's soul-stirring Cello Concerto features the virtuosic talents of cellist Zlatomir Fung, the youngest cellist ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. As Artist-in-Residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2023-24 season, Fung has appeared at London’s Cadogan Hall and is touring the UK with the orchestra. The 25-year-old has been hailed as one of the most promising young cellists of his generation: in describing his recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 2021, Bachtrack wrote "[He is] one of those rare musicians with a Midas touch: he quickly envelopes every score he plays in an almost palpable golden aura.” He last appeared with the BPYO in concert in 2022 as soloist on Elgar’s Cello Concerto and toured with the BPYO to Greece in June that year. The Westborough, MA native is a graduate of The Julliard School where he is also currently a faculty member.
Along with Dvořák’s and Elgar’s Cello Concertos, the Schumann is one of the great Romantic works for cello. “Schumann’s Cello Concerto requires an interpreter of the highest order,” says Zander. “Its moods are intimate, soulful, and confessional, almost like chamber music, and its three connected movements are like one long-drawn breath of lyricism that virtually cries out for Zlatomir’s subtlety and communicative power.”
Zander’s profound connection to Mahler's music has earned him significant recognition, including the very first Titan Award from the Mahler Society of New York. His passion for Mahler's compositions infuses every note with a profound sense of meaning and emotion.

The Bedford Garden Club’s annual sale of native plants and other perennials, various annuals including geraniums, and fresh cut flower arrangements is Saturday, May 11, at the Bedford DPW Building, 314 The Great Road, Bedford. From 9:30 AM to 2 PM. 
 The sale will offer floral arrangements in two sizes that are great gifts for Mother’s Day the next day, Sunday, May 12. Native plants and other perennials donated from the yards of Garden Club members will be featured, along with colorful annuals – all to raise funds for the Club’s civic activities and scholarship program. 
The Garden Club is promoting the sale of native plants because these plants support pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. 
 The Club’s new pocket guide will be on sale, Native and Invasive Plants of Bedford, Massachusetts and the Surrounding Area. The guide has been produced for the home gardener and landscaper interested in selecting native species that promote diversity and perform well.

When you arrive, please follow the cones and directions from the workers. Bring your vehicle as close to the truck or dumpster as possible. Feel free to remain in your vehicle, our workers will unload your items for you. 
Residents from all towns and communities are welcome to recycle. The event will be rain or shine. Computer hard drives will be destroyed during the recycling process, but can be removed on-site at the event for an additional charge. Cash payment is preferred, but checks will be an acceptable form of payments over $30.
