Bedford Municipal Housing Trust Accepting Applications For Small Grants Program

If you're looking to do light plumbing or electrical work, light carpentry or even masonry work to your Bedford home, you can now receive a small grant from the Municipal Housing Trust to do so.

 

Are you looking to make alterations or repairs to your home for health or safety reasons? There isn't a better time for Bedford residents to consider beginning a home improvement project.

The Bedford Municipal Housing Trust is now accepting applications for the small grants program, which awards up to $3000 to eligible applicants for home repair projects with no obligation to repay, according to the town website

Projects that would be eligible for the small grants program, according to the town website, include:

  • Minor plumbing and electrical work
  • Light carpentry 
  • Doorbell switch
  • Window repairs
  • Broken or clogged gutters or downspouts
  • Door repairs or replacements
  • Step or porch repairs
  • Lock repair or replacement
  • Cement work or masonry repair
  • Tiling
  • Plaster patching or wallpapering 
  • Sheet-rock repair
  • Touch-up painting
  • Smoke or CO2 detectors 
  • Weather Stripping
  • Bathroom grab bars
  • Interior painting 

Eligibility for the small grants program is first and foremost determined by primary residence in Bedford. Other requirements include:

  1. You must plan to stay in Bedford for the next 12 months. 
  2. Your income can't be higher than 80% of the median income of the Bedford area. As of December 2012 the median household income for a house of one person is $47,150, $53,900 for a house of two, $60,650 for a house of three and $67,350 for a house of four, according to the application.
  3.  Your home’s assessed value must be lower than 120% of the median assessed value. For 2013 the median value is $476,100, and 120% is $571,320, according to the application. 
  4. You must let the Municipal Affordable Housing Trust know before you list your house for sale.
  5. The repair or alteration must be completed within 12 months of the date the grant is awarded. 

The Municipal Affordable Housing Trust will "be evaluated and prioritized based on health and safety considerations, and financial need of the applicant," according to the town website.
